DO I HAVE TO BE AN RCC STUDENT TO BE IN THE BAND?
Yes. All marching band members must be enrolled in two (2) courses:
- MUS-60 • Summer Term
- MUS-48 • Fall Term
CAN I ATTEND ANOTHER COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY AND STILL JOIN RCC?
Yes. However, check with the admissions office at your other college/university for any special requirements or additional paperwork.
I ALREADY GRADUATED FROM RCC, CAN I RETURN TO BE IN THE BAND?
Absolutely. Just like everyone else, apply for admission and enroll in the required classes.
DO I HAVE TO BE A MUSIC MAJOR TO BE IN THE MARCHING BAND?
No.
DO I HAVE TO AUDITION TO JOIN THE BAND?
Yes, all members must audition for a spot in the ensemble each year. Carefully review the Audition section under the JOIN tab.
IS THERE AN AGE LIMIT TO BE IN THE MARCHING BAND?
No. However, because of WGI Percussion age-out rules, we typically prefer all fall percussion students to still be age-eligible for participation in our winter program, RCC Indoor Percussion. This does not mean you cannot be an age-out to march in the fall and, but it will be considered, depending on the talent level and number of people at auditions.
I’M HAVING REGISTRATION ISSUES, WHAT DO I DO?
Most registration issues are one of a few things:
- ALL STUDENTS: You do not have an admission application on file for the term you’re registering for. Did you apply for admission to the Summer term?
- RETURNING STUDENTS: You owe college fees from a previous term and must pay down your balance in order to register for a new term.
- FIRST-TIME STUDENTS: You haven’t completed Assessment, Orientation, and Counseling (AOC).
- RETURNING STUDENTS: You have taken the class four (4) times already and now need to audit instead. Email [email protected] for assistance.
IF I DON’T MAKE THE SECTION I AUDITIONED FOR CAN I AUDITION FOR ANOTHER SECTION?
Yes. Please contact us if you plan to audition for multiple sections so we can advise you how best to proceed.

HOW MANY PERFORMANCES DOES THE MARCHING BAND HAVE?
The Marching Tigers typically have 18-22 performances throughout the fall season, including 5-7 football games, 6-8 high school exhibitions, hosting 2 “Big Orange Classic” tournaments (performing at each), and 3-5 community/campus events.
DOES THE MARCHING BAND TRAVEL DURING THE FALL?
Sometimes. We do not go to football away games (some playoff game exceptions). Typically, we stay within 20-30 miles of RCC, carpooling to all performances. We do have a couple of performances beyond that range, up to 65 miles away, but we still carpool. If we travel farther (San Diego area, Central and Northern California, out of state, etc.) then we would use charter buses.
MINI-TOURS: Every few years we plan a “weekend trip." These trips have an additional out-of-pocket cost and are mandatory to participate for that season. This is usually announced at our spring Open House info meeting, giving you time to play and save up funds.

DO I HAVE TO BE IN MARCHING BAND IN ORDER TO JOIN OTHER ENSEMBLES?
No. However, as it relates to Fantasia Winter Guard and RCC Indoor Percussion, if you’re a newer member to our programs, participation in the fall marching band is highly recommended to build the additional skills necessary for those two highly advanced and competitive ensembles.
I’M MARCHING DRUM CORPS THIS SUMMER, WILL THAT CONFLICT WITH JOINING RCC?
No. Band Camp begins the Tuesday after DCI Finals. We understand that doesn’t leave any “time off” for you after returning home from a long summer tour, but if you’re going to participate in our ensemble we expect to see you on Day #1 after tour is over.
WIND PLAYERS: If you’re on tour with a drum corps you are still expected to record and submit an audition video. You will have to plan some time outside of your corps rehearsals to do this while on tour.
